3D Logo Design
A three-dimensional or 3D logo design looks fantastic on screen and digital media, thus offering you the opportunity to have your message springing off the screens and into your audiences’ hearts and minds. Branding experts and graphic designers have been debating for and against 3D logos versus the conventional two-dimensional or 2D logos. Which one should you choose? Do not fret. Our team here at Design Heroes is here to offer smart design insights and principles that will assist you in creating a logo that is sure to withstand the test of time.
Things to consider:
What is your advertising channel or medium?
3D logos are predominantly designed for high-resolution media displays as they lend themselves well to animation, thus bringing a brand to life. With aesthetically pleasing visual effects, they look stunning on websites, TV commercials and videos. On screen, they tend to ‘pop’, thereby drawing viewers’ attention to your products and services as the lettering and shape in 3D creates a much sharper impact than a flat 2D logo.
On the other hand, 2D logos tend to look better on printed media because getting the 3D gradient on paper to look smooth can be a tall order. Also, more often than not, these logos can’t go to print with no fewer than 4 colours, thereby increasing printing costs.
Contemplate where you’ll be showcasing your logo most frequently and then choose a design that will reproduce well in that medium.
What is your ultimate goal?
If you are planning to translate the logo onto merchandise such as handbags and t-shirts, a 3D logo design may not be the most ideal as there is some difficulty in getting the 3D image and/or wording stitched or printed onto your products. In most cases, you would most likely have to resort to re-designing another logo for this purpose.
However, if you want to feature your logo on ads via mobile, laptops, tablets and desktops with additional features such as dropping shadows or bevels, then opting for a 3D logo design would certainly make more sense.
Consistency of your brand identity
A successful and eye-catching logo, whether 2D or 3D, is the ultimate representation of your brand and its image and personality. Just because another company or competitor is using a 3D logo, doesn’t mean that you should follow in their footsteps.
Take into account the marketing and advertising channels, the costs and the message that you’re trying to convey and then make a decision. If you’re absolutely torn between the two, we would recommend a 2D version as your primary design for all printed materials and a 3D version for online and media channels. It is worth considering creating both as they can be adapted for different purposes.
3D logos do provide many unique and creative alternatives. For instance, if you’re a café owner, you can have a logo of a slice of cake so painstakingly design as if the sumptuous and decadent layers are melting in your month and it’s almost like you can even taste the velvety frosting.
As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. And a good logo makes an impression is just a matter of seconds. With the right image, your logo would appeal to emotions instead of reason. Hence your most important consideration with any design is what you want your customer to think and feel when they see the logo.
As a general rule, if you are already featuring intricate images in the logo, it is best to offset this by having simple typography or fonts. On the other hand, if you selected a simplistic design with minimal fuss, then you could take it up a notch with more elaborate typography such as incorporating vintage letterheads and embellished cursive detailing to add visual texture. For a more contemporary feel, feel free to experiment with modern typographic designs with the hallmark san-serif typeface. Due to its simplicity, weight and balanced proportions, it is pleasing to the eye and highly legible. What’s more, you can even add a splash of color and whimsy for a more visually impressive and distinguishable logo.
