Envelope Design: The Importance of a Well-Designed Envelope

Whether you need a sustainably-designed envelope or something more glamorous for your wedding invites, an envelope is just as important as its contents.

You spent some time working with a talented designer at Design Heroes to come up with a strong logo, a fabulous letterhead, and a myriad of other design delights. Now it is time to start thinking about your envelope design.

Hello! You didn’t think the most you needed to develop your office stationary is a company letterhead, did you? Once you start something, you should go all the way. Never forget that an envelope is just as important as its contents. You want to entice people to open the envelope to get to the delightful middle–your letter, invoice, invitation, or anything else you deem necessary to send through the postal system. You do not want your recipient to take one look at your envelope and toss it in the trash because it just did not look important enough to open. Do not make the mistake of letting your message go to waste. Whether you need an envelop for work or play, here are some simple tips to keep in mind when working on a design:

Decide on the type and size

When it comes to envelop types and sizes, there is a copious amount for you to choose from. If you need envelopes for your office, then regular ones with a window and secured self-seal should do the trick. As for the size, that is up to you, of course. It all depends on the type of documents that you happen to send the most of. Most companies opt for catalogue or booklet envelopes (6″x9″, 9″x12″, 10″x13″) and regular sized ones (4.125″x9.5″) as they are supremely versatile.

Figure out what you want on it

If it is for work, then your company logo and address are essential. There are no two ways about this. If you need an envelope designed for a personal or social event, then opt out of a logo (unless you happen to have one), and just place your name and return address on it.

Do you want it personalized?

From Louis Vuitton to W Hotel, everyone has jumped on the personalized envelope design bandwagon. This of course mainly happens when special events are hosted, as wow-ing invitees and making them want to come is all part and parcel of the marketing and PR plan. You can take a page out of their book if you need a well-designed envelope for your wedding, product launch, birthday party, or any social event that you have planned.

From an envelope that opens up into the actual event invitation, to one that spits glitter all over your ex, there is no reason why you should not get creative with your envelope.
